The college was established in June 1948 as an intermediate liberal arts college with 96 students. In 1950, the college was recognized by the University Grants Commission and it is supported by the West Bengal government as an aided college. North Bengal University accepted the college as a constituent college in September 2003; it is now under Gour Banga University

Selection Criteria For Balurghat College Admission 2022
Educational Qualification:
Honours Course: A minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate and 45% marks in the subject or related subject at the previous qualifying examination. For BBA 55% marks in the aggregate from any discipline.
General Course: For these Courses, a minimum of 40% marks in aggregate at the previous qualifying Exam.
However, Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe or OBC-A or OBC-B Community taking up Honours/Major/Vocation Course of Study must have obtained a minimum of 40% marks in the aggregate at the previous qualifying examination, as the case may be.
The formula for merit list preparation:
For General Courses: As per University Norms. (Excepting B.Com general)
For Honours Courses: Best of four + Subject Concerned. (Best of four = Marks secured in four subjects [full marks being not less than 100] in which a candidate has secured highest marks. Subject Concerned = the subject in which student applying for Honours. Compulsory environment studies paper shall not be considered.
Application Fee:
An application fee of Rs 200/- (Approx) excluding bank charges is to be paid online for each application, failing of which the application will not be considered. Detail about the mode of payment and bank charges will be displayed at the time of submission of the form.
Reservation of seats:
The number of Reserved seats for Scheduled Caste (22%), Scheduled Tribe (6%), OBC-A & OBC-B (as per Govt. norms)are shown against each Honours subject. For Physically Challenged candidates 3% of seats are reserved in each category.
